5 Years Wait After GC

My I-140 was approved in Aug 2001. I-485 filed Oct 2001 and approved Aug 2006 due to looong name check. I obviously wasted lots of time (5 years) in there that delayed my citizenship.

I am told by someone that I don;t need to wait for another 5 years for filing for citizenship as the period counts from the filing of I-485.
I s that true? Where can I find clear reference for this? CIS website does not explain the law in detail. thanks.
 
The form (N-400) uses the date on the back of your green card. Download the "Guide to Naturalization".

What is your green card's date?

Not true. Your time starts from the date your I-485 was APPROVED, not when it was filed.
 
There was some kind of bill or proposal to make 485 filing date for applying citizenship. But i guess it was not approved or never went further.
