4 years 1 day rule?

I am about to apply for naturalization with the 4 years 1 day rule. I came across a question on N-400 on part 7 which asked me how many days I spent outside of the US during the past five years. Do I calculate the total days during the past 4 years and 1 day or 5 years?

You should not be writing 959 days. You should calculate the # days within the 5 year statutory period and list them. Feel free to attach a note explaining this and that you are applying under 4 year 1 day rule. Do not show your trip starting in 2005 as that will be inaccurate.

Even though you are allowed to apply 4 years and 1 day after the end of that trip, you still need to calculate the days outside the US in the past 5 years.

Note that under the 4y+1d rule, you are likely to be required to show ties to the US during that last year when you were outside the US. So if you are unable to do that, your attempt at applying now probably will fail, and to reapply you would have to wait until it is 5 years minus 90 days since the end of that long trip.
