Hello immigration gurus

I have a question about the naturalization process. So i read the N-400 document and it says "before applying for naturalization", the applicant has resided within a state or district for at least three months.

I become eligible to apply for naturalization in November 2006. I have worked here all along and around August of next year want to take some courses for learning languages abroad. I have lived in the same city for more than 2 years of my life and have had continuous employment and residence (barring some trips abroad) in the US.

If I go abroad and start taking classes September, can I come in Nov/dec of next year to put in my application? I will maintain my bank accounts, car, permanent address here (No i don't own a home in the US)

Can i apply for naturalization in Nov/Dec and ask an attorney to coordinate with the USCIS?

Please help me with my question.

Thanks in advance you very much for all your inputs

Hi new10,

Once you have well-established residence in some location, even if you travel for a few months just before you apply for naturalization, it should be ok, IMHO. The "three months" rule is to enable someone to establish residence at a new location, before making the N-400 application. If you have established permanent residence in some location, I don't think the "three months" rule matters that much, even if you should take a short trip just prior to your application.

Good Luck!

Thank you so much

So I can leave for my classwork in August and come in December and apply for the N-400 in December? it is a one year course and I would like to know if there are any specific questions that i must front during the interview.

I appreciate all your comments!

Read "Page 55" in the Guide to Naturalization (M-476)

It states very specifically that "Have you resided in the state for
the ***LAST*** 3 months ?"

I am in the same boat having just visited India. I came back on Aug 21 was
eligible to apply on Oct 7 (since I gained PR on 6th Jan 2001 - using the defacto
rule that one can apply 90 days before the 5 yr period). I also asked this to two -three other folks and all of the them advised me to WAIT till Nov 21 (3 months
after the date I entered US back) and then apply.

Delaying the citizenship process by 2 months is not going to be that great
a deal ANYWAY :::)
