10 year B1/b2 extension. good idea?

For about two years I've been coming to the US and stayed 5 months. Never overstayed, never had any troubles (although the last time I entered I faced secondary inspection at the POE, they gave me 6 months again). I stayed in my country sometimes 4 months, sometimes 2.
In a month and a half I have to go back and I've been offered a position to volunteer at a school. I'm really excited but I will be starting in about a month, so I thought about asking for an extension. The thing that worries me is that if it is denied, my visa is cancelled and that's a risk I can't take (my boyfriend is a GC holder).
What do you think? is it a good idea to ask for an extension given my previous records? If the answer is yes, is it a valid reason that I want to stay to volunteer?
Thanks,
Kiss

please please

It's been a while since I posted this message and nobody answered. I'm sure there's someone who read it and has something to say. Please I'm starting to get a little anxious.

While applying for the first extension is generally not a problem and will get approved, getting a visa in the future once your current 10 year visa expires might be in jeopardy. If you anticipate being in the US on anything other than business or tourism, you should use the appropriate visa category for entry.

The problem with volunteering at a school is that even though you are unpaid, it is still considered work in the eyes of the USCIS and thus you need an appropriate employment based visa such as L, H, O, or TN.

That being said if you want to renew your B visa, it shouldn't be a problem. the border guards may question you a little but as long as you have never over stayed you visa, have never violated the terms of the visa, and retain permanent ties to your home country, you should be granted the visa.

thanks a lot

thank you all for the answers. They were very helpful and I've decided to go back to my country.
Regarding the volunteering issue, before I applied I surfed the web and tried to find any information about volunteer in the US with a B1-B2 visa, and I couldn't find anything. Thank you for that pieco of info too, now I'm glad I didn't take the volunteer option.
Good luck
thanks again.
