As long as you have your I-94 with asylum stamp on it and/or asylum approval letter you can go to SS office and apply for ss card without any restrictions. I had no troubles whatsover applying and received it in two weeks. Good luck

i hope you won't have any problems on your adjustment interview. But it all depends on IO mood and character. he might give you a hard time. But what kind of documented prove you had with you and what did they say when you were entering US from your trip back home?
