my medical expired (1 yr from initial medical) in April and I received passport request in Oct.- didn't ask for new medical. So, I guess, you should be fine. I am also waiting for my passport to be back.

tx2ca, The CIC letter for passport request says "Your passport will usually be returned to you within 15 business days from the day we receive them. This does not include any time it may take for the Post Office to deliver them" (page 2). Hope this helps.
