pgboston,
Can you please post all the dates? I have sent docs for OCI misc for my daughter 3 weeks ago (Jan 16) and haven't got any email from NYC office. Also status did not changed even to Acknowledgement. My phone calls and emails are not answered. I think something's seriously wrong...
Check this out http://www.indialiaison.com/faq.htm
29. Can a person registered as OCI be granted Indian citizenship?
Yes. As per the provisions of section 5(1)(g) of the citizenship Act, 1955, a person who is registered as OCI for 5 years and residing in India for 1 Year out of the above...
After getting US citizenship if person resides in india with OIC for long time (say over 5 years), can he invest in domestic accounts? If so what are tax implications as compared to local indian citizens?
If anyone knows & forward a web link for these kind of queries it would be helpful...
There is a saying..... "You can take Indian out of India but you can not take INDIA out of an Indian" :D
I think one of the major reasons for people taking up US citizenship is to avoid every 6 months mandatory entry in the country to maintain the Green Card.
If GC maintainance rule is...
Guys,
We are all in this country with individual needs, goals and priorities. So none of us here have the right to say what other people should do or do not. Also its individual's choice to acquire a specific country's citizenship or deny it.
I think a person's contributions to country...
OK, I am bit confused here....
I am aware of RNOR status. Basically states "Indian Resident" who stays 9 years out of 10 years abroad gets tax benefits for 2 years when person goes back to country for over 180 days (i.e. becomes loca resident).
Now that person (say OIC holder) after 2...
If this is True then OIC has atleast one advantage over Indian PP and that would be permanent NRE status ---> Tax benefits for life :D Unless RBI starts applying the new NRI rules to OIC holders in future.
Does anyone knows what would be the status of NRE accounts once person gets OIC ?Right on as per FEMA once NRI returns to india for more than 180 days he/she loses the NRI status and becomes "local resident" of the country and hence won't get tax benefits anymore. Is this going to be same for...
Pralay,
In the above example if person stays in some friend's or relative's addess (assuming person has already filed AR-11 to the stated address) during his/her visit.... is that going to affect LPR status?.
If not then why the person has to lie at POE?
I understand your point of why...
I may be wrong but I don't completely agree on this. People have different types of business for living and I believe "Renting the House Property" is one of them. If the person legally owns the house and rents it and pays tax at the end of year, I don't see the reason why that can't be used as...
Desi74,
In your first message you mentioned your friend owns a house in US. Isn't that a valid reason to enter US in any frequency as he rents that house and needs to look after the property? Its kind of business for him and I am sure he might have to show the rental income in his Tax filings also.
Interesting case....so you gave up US citizenship to get Indian citizenship years back (since you have Indian passport) and now you are trying to get the US citizenship??
If that is the case, you have to get the GC first and then wait 5 years to apply for "DUAL citizenship"...Experts can comment
Hi All,
Does anyone aware when Indian dual citizenship will resume? Latest I heard was they stopped accepting the application form for the same.
Thanks
Here's my experience in India while travelling back to US
Immigration Official looks at I-551 stamp (that time i didn't had plastic card) and asks "is this a valid visa? where is your green card??"
I answered him politely "Yes, its a temporary GC card valid for 1 year which has A# which is...
I think if person gets DUAL CITIZENSHIP its easy to maintain 401K account and get good benefits....
What happens to 401K account if person loses his GC status by the time he turns 60... Can he still withdraw that money?? If Yes, anyone knows the procedure??
Thanks
I knew "dual citizenship" was on hold...but looks like its not going to be implemented in near future. Difficult to figure out the "dirty politics" behind this
