As per my knowledge, once someone starts working on EAD, the status is changed from H1 to EAD.

I think after filing 485 for normal processing, it can be changed to CP by applying a new one and pulling out the existing. Please check with your Attorney.
My wife is on H1 for 4 years and she has two more years of validity. We're OK even if we withdraw the applications because none of us are dependant on EAD for working and AP for our status.
I think mainitaining some sort of valid status is important for the process.

Hopefully it would be a simple one. One of my friends H1 ext got RFE recently on "Employers ability to pay". His employer submitted some additional financial support and got through.

Physical passport may not be necessary. But you'll need copies to file with 140/485.
You may want to take a copy of full set of the passport (include all 32 pages) front and back before sending it to revalidation.
