It all depends which is your service center and DO. In my wife's case it was San Antonio and she got here green card in a little over 7 weeks. Some other DO's are slower.

Make sure you do not travel out of the US when out of status. You will be subject to 3/10 yr ban. Once your wife is a citizen you can file concurrently I-130,I-485 etc. Their website says if USC sponsor's out of status spouse they will be fine.

Get an appointment and talk to them. Make sure you get something in writing that you asked them about your case. Maybe your case is lost somewhere and they may come back and say your case is denied because you did not reply in time while actually you never got any reply from them.

San Antonio is fast. If your fp is cleared before your interview date you will get your GC quick. A lot of times transferring cases takes a long time, files get stuck/lost and you will not be able to get status. I would recommend keeping the apt.

ari4u is correct. The only situation you would be concerned is if you quit or lose your job. Then you would be out of status which is not a good thing. EAD can help just as a precaution but costs money. Also in some cases USCIS is not processing the EAD if the GC is approved faster then EAD...
