I know someone who has an R-1 visa valid until 2010. He works as a junior pastor or something in the church that got him the R-1 visa. He has a degree from a religious seminary. Can this person be sponsored for an H-1B by the church? His degree is equal to a bachelor's I believe.

Is it possible to apply to transfer from R1 (religious worker) to H1B (company is willing to hire) while in the United States? Is it possible to have this done before the April 1, 2008 cap expires? The R1 is valid until June 2009. Nothing has been filed yet for the H1B.
