Thanks for the information. So it was indeed ambiguous at the time when I applied. With the current rules in mind I am not sure whether I will take a chance. I don't want to face a situtation where I go to India and my child is stopped at the immigration.

Yes. OCI for my child was granted on 1st Feb 2006 as per MHA Online Status. FYI The reference number assigned during online registration part A still says File Number doesn't exist. I got a different number from Chicago Consulate along with the receipt which gave the Granted status.

I applied for my minor kid couple of weeks back at Chicago Consulate. Got a acknowledgement y'day along with a File Number. The status on MHA website says 'Granted'. Will post when I get the OCI certificate and U Visa.
