Yes, u have to send in the original greencard with ur application. Notorized copies are not acceptable. And ur greencard is not going to get lost in the mail. if u re worried about that, then u should also be worried about losing ur passport.

They usually send u an e-mail when ur application is Opened(not received) which could be a wk to almost 2 wk from the day it was received at the consulate. If u had a tracking # either with UPS or USPS, then u should get a confirmation as soon as the package is signed for by the consulate...

if you get the greencard after the child is born, u DONT need a visa for the kid to enter the US. The kid will be given permanent residence at the US port of entry as both parents are US residents. darn, this kid would lose an oppurtunity to be US president in future as he might be born...
