Yes, u have to send in the original greencard with ur application. Notorized copies are not acceptable.
And ur greencard is not going to get lost in the mail. if u re worried about that, then u should also be worried about losing ur passport.
They usually send u an e-mail when ur application is Opened(not received) which could be a wk to almost 2 wk from the day it was received at the consulate. If u had a tracking # either with UPS or USPS, then u should get a confirmation as soon as the package is signed for by the consulate...

if you get the greencard after the child is born, u DONT need a visa for the kid to enter the US. The kid will be given permanent residence at the US port of entry as both parents are US residents.
