you absolutely do not need a lawyer , all you need is to fill a form / copy of passport/ copy of i94/ 2 photos / evidence of bio-metric./copy of asylum receipt if you can not provide or fill the form properly you can pay the lawyer to do it for you . and yes the EAD would take up to 3 month...
it depends on your asylum case , if your case against the government of your country or any entity associated with it , do not get the passport . generally do not go or apply for a passport from your country regardless of your case if you want to keep your permanent residency in the US

you do not need a new social security card, since your EAD is based on a temporary status (i-797)> you only need to update the SSN card if you get a permanent status , like green card , approved asylum .....

you have to be patient , my EAD application took 87 days from the day i mailed the application to the day i received the actual card ., after you get the card you have to go the SSA office and apply for the SSN card , you will received it by mail in 7-15 days .
