The situation with your wife, since she is in F1, that's definitely more risky since F1 is not dual intent like H1. And while she can still study in H4 visa, she can't have the assistantship as you said. But if you have maintained your status in US and so did your wife, I am not sure why the US...

Ok I have decided to switch to CP processing from AOS, I guess I will have re-submit forms for my wife. Does it matter at all if my wife doesn't change her last name in her passport and instead we use her maiden name only in the Gc application?

I think once it says current, regardless of CN number you can start the processing. I am also hoping it works that way, my case number is in 16K from Asia, ya really hopeless it seems but I am keeping my fingers crossed. :D In my forms to KCC i indicated to do AOS, I wonder if I can change it...
