I had checked the consulate web-site a couple of days ago. It stated clearly that green-card holders do not need a transit visa. However, they are required to show that they have a valid passport and greencard. I'll be going through AMS in December.

I got my passport renewed last January, it was
6 months short of the expiry date. It had been valid for 10 years. Took only a day to get it renewed (had gone personally).
Some of my senior colleagues who have been permanent residents for decades recently became citizens for just this reason. They found that setting up the trusts etc., even with professional help was non-trivial.
