Home Career Starter You must have a perfect lie. To get backspin the clubface must have clean contact with the ball. Any grass between the ball and the clubface effectively nullifies the grooves. This is why you will hear commentators say that players cannot get any spin or control out of bad lies. Earlier I mentioned that you have probably had more backspin on par threes than any other hole. The reason is that on a par three you always have a perfect lie - even when using a peg - off the tee. Make sense?
