But the extension period is going to expire at the end of this month & after that we will not have any proof in hand to show the permanent residency. My wife is eligible for citizenship on 25th sep,2013 & I am not sure if we can file N400 without having new green card in hand? Thanks!

$1400/month is way high for any one...I think there are some county sponsored programs available for legal immigrants...not sure if those count against benefits..

Thanks Zee Zee for the information. I am not sure if our county (Collin) provides any assistance but i will check again. Yes they have green cards but they came here in US 2 months back so I am not sure about how the residency rule is going to apply .
