Your safe bet is to be on H1. The reason being: if for some wildest reason your I485 is denied, you can still continue to work, since you would be on H1.

Please don't get confused with H1 Visa and AP. You can work on your H1 and still use your AP to travel and come back and continue to work on H1 with the same employer. AP is just a travel document that allows you to travel abroad and return to US while your I485 is pending. Thats all is there...

Well! wait till Aug and I hope your sponsoring company files your H1 again after Aug 15th 2008. You get h1 for 1 year...based on your Labor certification. If your company has filed your I-140, and if its approved, then you can apply for 3 year extension and you don't have to wait till Aug 15...
