i went through premium processing, visa got approved and i have started working, still online status check says decision will be given in 15 days. ie the approval has not been updated. i doubt the reliability of the online status check

Hi - I was on an H4 visa so far ( so didnt have a SSN). I have recently obtained an H1 visa through premium processing and now want to apply for SSN. Is it a reqt to have a SSN before I can start work. Or can start work even without it and then later apply for it? Thanks a lot
