Can I leave USA before I get my EAD?

Hi, I applied for my EAD under L2 in Dec'04. I have not received my EAD. Can I leave USA for a short trip? I read somewhere that if you leave before you receive your EAD or interim EAD, your application will be deemed abandoned. Is this correct? Thanks!!
