What happens if my PD becomes current?

I am about to send in for an 8th year extension on my H1B. I have approved I140. My PD is March 2007.

My question:
If I send in payment (my employer "pays", but I actually am the one who foots the bill) and my I129, etc, and my PD becomes current in the June or July bulletin, am I simply out the $$$ to renew H1B?

If my PD become current, do I still need the H1B to continue working until the GC process is complete?

It is not absolutely necessary for you to renew H-1B. you can work on EAD too. Nobody knows about immediate effect of PD becoming current. However, the H-1B can help in a particular situation: suppose I-485 was ruled in an unfavorable manner, then the time remaining on H-1B may allow the employer to start another GC ... (varies from case to case) ...
