If you apply for job in the bank .. you gonna be ask for green card!
Did anybody have same kind experience?

A friend of mine, who is a refugee, has a high ranking position in a private bank in Manhattan.

If HR manager is an idiot, there is little hope.

You can threaten them with a lawsuit (thus reducing your chances of getting a job to an absolute minimum).

Don't act dumb like most americans who don't knw anything about the law. You are an Immigrant, its your responsiblity to know the laws. You should know that an Asylee or even a LPR can show a Unrestricted Social Security Card and a Drivers license to show eligibillty for work. Simple as that.

DO NOT fall into the trap of americans who don't know anything about the law. BEFORE your first day of JOB, go to uscis.gov and print the I-9 form, complete it and circle SSN CARD & Drivers license and when you show up for work the first day. Present it all prepared. DO NOT give them the opportunity to ask for anything else. What is law is law...If you explain to the HR and they read it, they will be happy with what they have.

And its not like they dont verify it. THey verify with USCIS that you are eligible to work...

Yes. In most cases, it depends on the HR staff. Unfortunately most of them are kind of idiots.

It is your responsibility to assert your right to work in the United States. As asylees you have permanent work authorization in the US. You can work in the banking industry. If you have problems call the Department of Justice's Office of Civil Rights. They have lawyers who will help you out.

I worked in a bank (Chase Manhattan) in 1992, when my Asylum Application was still pending. EAD and SSN weresufficient. Of course, EAD was necessary then when I wasn't an asylee yet and I had to renew it annualy, but I had the right to work.

Now this year, the bank where I got the mortgage from asked me for the GC or EAD. I printed the memos from the BCIS site (or some other immigration site) about not needing EAD if you are an asylee, and they accepted it.

Of course, we're in the post 9-11 period and things have changed a lot since then.

Geez, thanks for the vote of confidence

I am actually in HR, ha h ah ha...but you do have a point, I had to actually argue with a colleague about an asylee girl's documents...our immigration specialist advised that RTD was not enough. Rubbish.

We are such a small group comparatively speaking that most HR professionals don't know what to do with us. But - rest assured - YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY ELIGIBLE FOR ANY AND ALL JOBS IN THE US. No need to threaten to sue them, just say that you are positive about this, and show them the I-9. OK?
WRite if you need more help.

state id and unrestricted social security card

state id and unrestricted social security card - that's all we need, but it doesn't hurt to have a I-94 with stamp "authorized to work" which doesnt have an expiration date (RTD and work permit will expire as you all know). By law they cannot ask for anything other than state id and unrestricted social security card, if that is what YOU CHOOSE on I-9 when u get employed

Only when reentering US at the port of entry from a trip aboard.Never in immigration office. So that means, every asylee has to leave the US and come back to get it.Good business for airliners. Also good business for uscis on RTD issuance.Bad news for employers who's gonna be receiving a lot applications for vacation.
