Valid Documentation for a Minor U.S citizen to Visit Canada

We are planning to vist Canada by road along with our kid and we were wondering what documentation we would need for him to visit Canada (and for re-entering USA). Our kid is a US citizen. We do have a valid birth certificate and a valid State ID but WE DO NOT HAVE a US passport currently.
Is the US passport a compulsory requirement for our kid to visit Canada and re-enter USA. Appreciate if you someone can provide some feedback.
