Urgent - Visitor Visa Extension ?

My MIL return date is on March 13,2013 and was planning to go. But due to some unforeseen circumstances, we are planning to apply for her extension. My question is


1. IF she did not get approval before March 13, can she stay legally until the status of her application is known ?
2. Do we need to send original I-94 card attached to her passport ?
3. Is there any original document need to be send ?

Please advice as soon as possible...

Are ypu applying for extension online? Once an application is received and acknowledged by USCIS, her stay remains legal until the application os processed. You can apply online at: http://www.uscis.gov/uscis-elis, follow instructions about I-94. No original documents are needed but if there is a medical reason, it would be nice to provide it to USCIS in the form of a letter from a doctor or hospital.
 
The most important variable is the reason for which an extension is being sought. Anything that could have been addressed with a better timed initial entry is NOT a justifiable reason to seek an extension.
