URgent PRoblem on L1 Visa, please help

Hi Guys
My freind is on L1 visa and the expiry date on his visa is 21 Aug 2003.,though his PED and I-94 is valid till 16 Aug 2005.Could anyone tell me whether he is in status or not, or he needs to file for L1 extension.

Visa expiration date is not relevant if the person is now in US. Visa only means that you can arrive in the port of entry. I-94 actually determines how long you can stay. Your friend is still in status based on I-94.
 
I think in my psoting I did some mistake, his approval notice got expired in Sep 2003, but I94 still valid till 2005, is he still in status

How is this possible? What does the I-797 approval notice state as the expiration date? Why does the I-94 expiration not match this?
