Spouse of L1 visa holder can work?

Is it true if a person is working in the US on a L1 visa, then their spouse can work legally in the US without any additional visa? I know for sure that a person who is in the US on a H1 visa cannot have their spouse work legally. The spouse would require another H1 visa on their own. But this is not the case for the spouse of L1 visa holders? Is there any other difference between L1 and H1 visa holders for thier spouses? Please let me know, thanks.
 
Yes, it is very much true that the spouce of an L1 can work. The correct procedure is to 1st apply for an EAD (Employee authorization document) for your spouse and then once she gets the EAD, she can work. Meanwhile, also apply for the SSN.
