PR traveling to Canada with expired passport

What documents are required for a US Permanent Resident to reenter US from Canada?
I need to travel to Canada Feb 1st (for business) and just noticed that my foreign passport is expired. My conditional Permanent Resident is still valid. Do I need a valid passport to travel to Canada after Jan 23 2007?

It can take up to 6 months to renew my passport.
I am also from a country that requires Visa to enter Canada.
Does the green card waive the need for a Canadian Visa?

My wife and I traveled to Canada recently. Passports are not needed on both sides.

Our GCs are unconditional, though.

Hi:

Canada does not distinguish between conditional and unconditional GCs for purposes of entry of a US PR to Canada.

If your are flying, then yes. If using a land crossing, then no.

If you cann't get the passport renewed, then fly in to the nearest US city, and then cross over by land.
