CORRECT! As long as you travel with the U sticker in your US passport, and your OCI certificate booklet along with it, you can travel to India @ will.

You have both coices -
You can either cancel your Indian passport much before you apply for OCI (in which case you have to send in a separate return postage fee and self addressed enevlope for getting the cancelled passport back). You will need to wait for the cancelled passport to come back so that you can include its photocopy with the OCI application.

OR you can send it for cancellation when you send your US passports for getting the U sticker and OCI certificate.

The important thing to remember is that after leaving the Indian citizenship, you should not have used your indian passport in any way, and also not a very long time should have elapsed since you left the Indian citizenship.

The DC embassy's web site says that DO NOT send your Indian passport (any other original document/passport) with OCI application form.

I sent my Indian passport for cancellation when I sent my US passport for the OCI sticker, and since I had already sent in the return postage fee earlier along with my OCI app, I did not send another return postage fee.

I sent in my Indian passport for cancellation along w/my OCI application. The site just says not send the original passport along w/the OCI application. I took that to mean only send photocopies for the docs that were required for the OCI application.

Consider the relevant sections from the indianembassy's page http://www.indianembassy.org/newsite/oci.asp

Under the section "Don’ts" -
Please do not send original Passports along with the OCI application.

Then further below under the section
7. Status of OCI Application/Enquiries/Assistance
...
Original foreign passports should be sent to the Embassy only after checking the OCI application status at http://ociindia.nic.in/ociindia/OnlineOCIenquiry.jsp. If the status appears as documents received at Washington, then mail the foreign passports to the Embassy mentioning the file no for seeking U visa sticker and OCI Card.

Also include valid Indian passports/PIO cards for cancellation, if not already cancelled. Failure to do so will delay the issue of OCI document.

I took the above instructions to mean that I should send Indian passport for cancellation along with the US passport.

Donlogan, Did you get your cancelled Indian passport back? If yes, then when? Did you have to send a sepaarte return postage for getting it back?

I sent my Indian passport along with my application and received the cancelled booklet along with my U visa and registration card. What they don't want you to send with the application is the original foreign passport.
 
I got my cancelled Indian passport back along w/the 'foreign' passport. No extra postage. I still think that they just don't want any original documents (ie send photocopies only) along w/your OCI application.

The cancellation part isn't relevant to the OCI so I don't see how they would care when you send it.
