N-400 application fee $595!!!

Bush's administration will publicly announce today that it is planning to increase immigation applications fees across the board around 80%.

In terms of N-400 application, that would translate to rise from $330 to $595. Supposedly, fingerprinting fee would go from $70 to $80.

Therefore, the total N-400 fee will jump from $400 to $675 or about 70%.

Fee increase will take efffect no sooner than 120 days after they are published in the Federal Register (supposedly tommorow?), including a 60-day "public comment" period.

This increase will not address (potential) costs that would result from the major overhaul of the Immigration Policies/Laws, including so-called comprehensive immigration reform, amnesty, guest worker program etc.

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!

Well....if this allows them to integrate their systems more and upgrade their systems...which will let them be more efficient, maybe it's well worth it. Still...it's a lot of dough

Certainly, this does not include expedite processing. That would be extra $$$ on a top of new fees.

It looks like that there will be no expedite processing route for N-400.

Yeah....it seems that those who want to apply in May'07 will have a nice fee hike ;)

What do you expect from a monopoly organization, and the cuban origin head of the organization who says US citizenship is priceless and even doubling the fee is small price to pay. I guess it may be so for some one who can make ito to the shores of the US in a dingy, but may not be the case for those who immigrated through a highly skilled immigration route.

Sometimes having immigrants heading such government departments can mean they start applying the standards of their home countries to the US situation. The only solution to this is to disband the USCIS and throw it open to private contractors to do the job efficiently and at lower costs.

Oh sure... you mean private contractors like Haliburton and co, who did such a thorough job of raping taxpayers during Hurricane Katrina rebuilding efforts.

None, I think I'd prefer to stick with a govt monopoly rather than have something like this farmed out to the lowest bidder. At least USCIS is somewhat predictable in their plodding slowness.

Right on, brb2!!! Privatize the processing. No private entity would get away with such inefficiency in the marketplace!

Cheers!
