Medical Insurance for parents coming to the US

I couldn’t find a better place to post this question on this forum.

I will be a US citizen in December 2004. I plan to apply for my parents who live in India to come to the US on a permanent basis. Both my parents are a little more than 65 years old. Once they arrive on a green card, would they be eligible for Medicare? Or any government sponsored medical insurance? Or do they need to be a US citizen before they become eligible?

If they are not eligible for any government assisted medical insurance, do you have any suggestions on any good insurance companies and how much they might charge?

Thanks in advance for your responses.

There is a special program for seniors who immigrate.
My friends grandmother is not a citizen and has never worked in the States. In fact, the family moved here from Cambodia when she was nearly 70. But she still gets her medical taken care of by the government and recieves some money from Social Security as well.

My friend if your parents are legal residents or going to be legal residents and you are in California then there is a state funded program called MediCal that is definitely for your parents, I did for my parents. visit this web site http://www.medi-cal.ca.gov/
Please let me know, if I could be of any help to you.

best wishes and regards to your parents.

My understanding is that they still would be required by federal law to get any expense refunded by the person(s) who signed the affidavit of support. Federal law always trumps state law.

But JoeF, why would federal govt be concerned if state govt is willing to pay for it? I think there would be concern if one were to use any benefit under some federal program. No?

Yes dear friend I can certainly give some info regarding this insurance. First and most important requirement for Medi-Cal is 65 years of age. If you can proof that your parents are 65 and over and either they have no income or very low income, proof of legal residence like green card and proof of CA residency with CA ID card that you can get from DMV, Social Security Card, and a bank account on your parents name. Thats all you need. You can take your parents to social services location in your area and submitt the application for Medi-Cal. You don't have to pay anything.

I hope i have given you enough information to proceed.

Good Luck!

SyedNaqvi,
you definately sound like you know what you're talking about. Sounds like you've tried and tested it :) I know immigration laws are slightly different in California, (Proposition 187), so this may be the case. Good Luck!

Can I claim the parents to be my dependent and use company's insurance plan to cover them?
No. In US Parents doesn't come in your family. Only you, your spouse and your kids. You can claim them as dependent in your tax return though. If they have lived with you for more than 6 months.

The link you have provided is a rip off. They say that health insurance companies don't provide coverage for immigrants over 65. This is wrong.

I would suggest you call your state's health insurance commissioner and find out more. Here in MN, if any health insurance denies insurance to anyone over 65 (including just landed immigrants) they are eligible to buy a state plan. Find out if your state has something similar.

You may want to read http://www.visitormedicalinsurance.com/guide/new-immigrants-medical-insurance-plans.jsp to get better understanding of health insurance for new immigrants.

I was referring to permanent rsidents and did not note that the query was for visitors.

Yes, you are right. I would not be surprised if he is a commission agent on the linked sites.

Hi all,

My parents are permenant residents of USA (they got it through my brother who is a naturalized US citizen). We used to get insurance for them from the following link.

http://www.buyamericaninsurance.com/?affiliateid=immihelp

However, my dad just turned 70 and they (him and my mom) just got back from vacation. When I tried to get insurance for my dad, there are no policy for people who are more than 69 years old.

Do you guys know any insurance company that provide insurance for immigrants who are more than 69 years old.

Thanks,
newbie001.

Can't you get medicare?

Don't know for sure, but I was under the impression that if you are over age 65 but don't qualify for Medicare because you don't have enough quarters of work, then you could still get Medicare after paying monthly premiums (currently $393/month).

No this is not correct. Bill Clinton's adminstration brought in a rule that only citizens or "qualified non-citizens" are eligible for it. Green card holders are eligible 5 years after entry as PRs. At that high price it is more advantageous to get health insurance.
