I read somewhere that after 485 approval, Passport stamping is optional. We can simply wait for physical green card. Is it true.

It's not optional. When you go for stamping, you provide your photographs and index finger print. This photos and FP are used for making your plastic green card. Without these two, USCIS cannot make plastic card for you.

There are other circumstances when USCIS calls applicant for interview. In interview photos and index FP are collected. Later they send the approval notice. In that scenario when photos + FP are already collected, passport stamping is optional.
