Immigration vs Student Visa

I wish to immigrate to Canada. Presently I am working for a software company in US and have a masters degree im MIS from US. I also wish to apply for a PhD in Management. Can I go to Canada on students visa for PhD and from there apply for immigration or should I wait for immigration approval and then join the PhD program.
Please advise on this.

brother since you have a job in the states I suggest you apply in the independent immigrant category for skilled workers, get your landing papers and then move to Canada and get as many diplomas as you want...
