How long before scheduling infopass for parents?

A US citizen friend of mine is sponsoring his parents (who are overseas) for US green card, It has been over six months since the application was submitted and we didn't hear back from USCIS.

Is now a good time to schedule an info pass to check on the application status?

What is the average time period?

Any info would be very helpful and thank you very much
