H1B Activation Period? [Urgent]

If I apply for a new H1B in 4/2006 and say got approved (for full 3 years);

How long can I hold on to the approved H1B before I can activate it?

Note: I am currently working on L1 and want to maintain the L1 status for as long as possible which allows my spouse to legally work in US for longer duration. My L1B is valid till 5/2008.

It depends on how H1 application is filed.
If change of status is done, you can not hold H1 job on once start date has passed.
If no change of status is done, you can hold on H1 activation as long as you want.

Thanks that answers it. I can hold on to new H1 till my L1 expires.
New H1B is filed instead of doing change of status from L1 to H1.

One followup question could be?
As L1 stamping is done every year though petition is valid for 2/3 years; can I extend my L1 visa using the L1 petition every year eventhough I have a new valid H1B approval with me.
