H1 and projects outside US

Hello all,
I am on a H1b with a consulting company and I have a project in Canada for 3-6 months. I have a canadian PR (permanent residency) and I want to know what happens to my h1 visa while i am gone. I transfered from F1 to H1 in the 20000 quota for 2005 and my h1 visa has not yet been stamped in my passport. However, I have my new I-94.
My questions are:
If I want to come back to the US for projects through my employer here:
- Will I have to get my visa stamped at a counsulate when I want get back to work in the US?
- Will my H1b be valid if my company does not pay me directly during this time? (there is a chance that I may be paid by the client directly)
- Will I have to explain why I am coming back into the US after 3-6 months?
- Will my status be legal when I return having not worked for my employer for this period of time?
- Can I simply take a Leave of Absence or unpaid leave from this employer for 3-6 months? If I do this will there be a problem when I go for visa stamping in Canada.

Thanks in advance for you responses.
