GOing home for change of status F-1 to J-1

I am currently on an F-1 visa practical training, working in the same lab (at a university) I did my PhD in. Since it is running out soon we have asked for a change of status to J-1 while in the USA. It is still pending.
I would like to go back to my home country for a visit in about a month, but I need to re-apply for the J-1 over there. Should I risk it? Are they going to give me trouble with this visa or is this a simple matter?
Will letters from my sponsor saying we are in the middle of a project help?
Will this affect future chances of getting an H-1? (my country has no residency requirement).
I had a child while legally in the USA, will that affect it?
Any advice is welcome…

my country has no residency requirement????

are you sure about this? many people said their J1 don't have 2 year home residency rule, but ,in fact. they have.

i advise you stay in US. US will process your case for about 3 months.
