I filed my I-485 on August 31, but my employer received a letter Friday to pay the $5 for the I-485 filing fee increase. Technically, the new fee took effect October 26, almost 2 months after I filed, but we still were asked to pay the new fee. Obviously this must be a USCIS error that we can contest, but our thinking is that since we are in the process of receiving an RFE and this additional fee letter, my case must be in the final stage of processing (following several LUDs) so we are just going to respond to the RFE and pay the 5 bucks and get it over with without even fighting it.
