Does your plane ticket to the US have to be to the city where you're working?

So currently live in city X, USA, with current job, but will be working in city Y, USA, for next job. I'd ideally like to fly back to city X just to move my stuff to city Y; i.e. move my stuff after re-entering rather than before. Is this doable or do border officials expect the destination on your plane ticket to be where you're working? Could I just explain that I am just wrapping things up in city X and perhaps show them a receipt of purchase for a flight the next week to city Y?

Yes, but can you go anywhere? E.g. if your TN-job is in New York, can you enter with a plane ticket going to Dallas

All you need to do is explain yourself. They don't care how you get to work. What if you were driving?
