Does the TSA have new Immigration powers?

A rumor is circulating that the TSA will soon receive increased responsibilities in the areas of immigration control. With the new rules requiring your full name including middle name and date of birth for your boarding pass, they will be able to better check people against the ‘no-fly’ list. Initial intention is to reduce confusion, mis-identification, and decrease hold-ups. Good idea assuming competent people are running the program.

However, a rumor is that they will also be able to run names against the database of visa overstayers. Somewhere out there is a list of people who are a low priority having never committed any incursions with the law nor drawn attention to their status. They are not on any ‘no-fly’ list nor are they on any police or law enforcement watch list…..they simply overstayed an I-94 years ago. Surely a list for these overstays exists.

So my question is….are the TSA going to be able to pull people off domestic flights within the US and detain them for immigration control officers, based on a cross check against this overstay list???

Does this mean that overstayers in the US can no longer fly domestically?

If all of this is true, when will it be taking effect?

Any enlightenment appreciated…..
