Dependents' visa have later expiration date

Hi,

I'm a bit puzzled by my dependents' visas. I have an E-2 that expires in February 2014, making it valid for two years. However, when my dependents (wife and step daughter) had their visas made, it was made for five years, expiring only in February 2017. How is that possible? My wife and step daughter are from a different country, so it was made at a different consulate, - but that shouldn't change the validity.

So my question is; are their visas valid until Febuary 2017, independent of mine?

Thanks!
