Can I apply H4 by myself, instead of waiting for my husband's employer to file for it

I will be getting married in April. My would-be's employer will only book H4 interview appointment with US consulate only after I get the marriage certificate. But it looks like I/my husband can book the appointment date by ourselves in the US consulate website, instead of waiting for the employer to book the interview date. Even though we apply by ourselves, we will be able to get required documentation from my husband's employer stating his nature of work, his experience etc... I will have all required documentation to attend the interview.

So, I would to know if it's ok to go ahead and book the appointment by ourselves rather than wait for the employer. Appreciate your inputs.
