Can affirmative asylum be converted to defensive?

Hello everyone,

Back in 2013 I applied for Affirmative asylum in OR and I got assigned to the office of SA. I received my receipt of i589 (affirmative) at the time and did my biometrics / fingerprints.

Today I received another notice which is from Nebraska's office, telling me, they have received the copy of my i589 (defensive) which was filled on behalf of me (??) in US and it mentions I am in the process of removal (???).

In the meantime, I have received another mail, asking me to do fingerprints again. I have a lawyer and my lawyer is not informed of these letters neither (first notices were sent out to him as well).

I do have a valid F1 status and I do have a valid work-authorization card. I was just wondering if this is just a mistake in immigration system or someone else has had this experience before.

thanks in advance.
