I think what they told you by phone that they are waiting background check is not true. better to call the fbi namecheck department . their number is given on this site somewhere and they will tell you the status of your namecheck.

So the immigration officer in Chicago thought that you stayed out of the us for 2 yrs instead of 10 months? didn't you show her the passport stamps that show that you were out for 10 months? moreover during those 10 months, did you have an apartment leased in us?
