Are you saying I need to report my Mom's India pension income in my Tax return???
I think the pension income is tax deducted at source in India. So, technically she has already paid tax in India - although it is zero - since no tax is deducted as it less than the first slab :-).
Thanks.
My Mom got GC and came to USA last year Oct 2010.
She does NOT work in the USA.
She receives pension in India - which is below the India tax bracket of ~Rs1.6 lakh. So she does not (never filed) file taxes in India. The pension amount she receives is also below ~$3500 USA dependent income...
this whole OCI thing is not well thought out. i still think the GoI should have simply done the following:
http://forums.immigration.com/showpost.php?p=2120976&postcount=7
that way, they still get money for pio renewal every 15 years. or even make it 10 years like passport or GC. ;-)
for minors, another reason why PIO is better than OCI (info may be outdated though):

Only what I read in the forums. Although Security clearance officals seem to have a good idea that OCI is not dual citizenship, some clearance level seem to require that you do not hold a permanent visa of any type to another country. So, in that aspect OCI may be a problem. One of my friends...
ok, I did some research and as of today and I (we) am thinking of going with PIO (note that I (we) am eligible for OCI) for the following reasons:
- possible USA security clearance issues with OCI
- really didn't like sendng in the passport to consulate to get OCI visa; would have been nice...
anybody updated their social security yet? we went there today - they said they can't verify the data in their system (said it takes 10 days) and asked us to come back :-(.
at least they could have taken our info and update it once it is available. now we have to go back again. :-(
we became US Citizens as of today.
reached there around 11am for a 12:05p interview appointment. our names were called for interview around 12:30p. the interview went smooth without issues. we said yes to same day oath and we received oath letters for the 2pm oath. oath was done by 4pm...
my interview is at 12:05p, so I may not have same day oath (but i am hoping :-)).
suppose i was given next day oath, i plan to stay in atlanta. which is a good nearby hotel?
this is what google search gives...

i hate this OCI visa renewal on the passport. why can't the GoI simply declare the OCI registration booklet as a travel document - just like the PIO card - and keep it independent of passport info, just like USA GC.
</rant>
btw, IMHO, this whole OCI thing doesn't make sense to me. GoI should simply say dual citizenship not allowed. period.
they could have achieved the same as follows: simply add a consular/GoI stamp statement in PIO card (for the people who would satisfy the current OCI requirements) saying...
the form N-659 asks for "all passports and travel documents (including expired and current)". does this mean AP (advance parole) as well? is AP a travel document? i think i still have these old APs. just wondering - better safe than sorry.
If you applied for PIO instead of OCI, what is your reasoning behind that...
Some of my friends (actually, most of them) applied for PIO instead of OCI after getting citizenship. Their reasoning is that there is no big advantage to OCI over PIO (no registration for stay over 6 months is the...
