What if one applies for a new card and all of sudden recover the first card that was thought to have been lost? Is the first card still usable for entry/exit? Has CIS provided any guidelines to how to handle such a situation?
But the point is they seldom do so unless if the person appears to be nervous. So that comes back to the issue of whether they are able to know if you departed by driving across the border.
If the immigration officer doesn't check the computer or ask how long you were gone (happened in one case for me a few months ago),
Even if the immigration officier check the computer, are you sure they know how long you were gone if you had last departed by driving across the land crossing?
My brother's re-entry permit was approved, unfortunately, the permit was mailed to his old address before he submitted the new address to BCIS (he just moved home). It's possible that the permit was returned to them since mailing forwarding is not allowed with such document from BCIS.

I wonder how foreigners can hang on with silicon valley for so many years without jobs, given the super high cost of living there. Please share your insights if possible.
I highly suspect foreigners still keep coming into the valley to look for job, because it's almost impossible given so...
Please don't get me wrong. I am not using the counts from church just to predict, that's not scientific. But considering the huge gap between public data released by labor department vs. reality, you have to question the reliability of government data.

The US unemployment rate figures have serious fault. People once having exhausted their UI beneifits but are still unemployed are not counted towards the unemployed populations. There are also lots of other types of unemployed people that are not considered.
Is the current unemployment rate...
Massive layoffs in the US during the past few years has greatly impacted many new (potential) immigrants, regardless of whether or not you have a green card/US citizenship.
It is unfortunate that nowdays many layoffs doesn't start with a quarterly loss, but with a reduced profit margin...
Are you sure they didn't swip green card? One of my friend who just visit Vancouver by shuttle bus from Seattle had green card swiped at the POE by Canadian immigration, but no stamp was put on passport. Maybe the way they treat bus riders is different from those of driving private cars across.
Thanks for your sharings.
-when passing the US POE, did the officier SWIPE your green card or not? Or just simply took a look at it. Was your passport stamped?
-when entering Canada, was your green card swiped through the Canadian immigration machine? It is expected that you surrender...
In addition, receiving UI benefits won't jepordize your GC status or future citizenship application.
Recently there has been so legislative updates allowing GC holders to receive public financial assistance without affecting their elgibility for citizenship.
This is a very typical obstacle faced by many new immigrants for the past few years after the bust of IT bubbles. The bottom line problem is the tough US economy and job market. As an average person, it's hard to stay in the US for a long period of time without reasonable means of financial...
Your friend's PR status would be doubtful, since as mentioned earlier, she was mostly not asked for an interview by the former INS, who always need to confirm that the employment still exists before granting PR status to someone.
You should have your friend check with an immigration expert...
