Working after J1 expired

I got accepted to grad school with a full Research Assistanship. I am offered the option to choose between J1 and F1. I do not have dependents and since the Assistanship will be paid by the school, I do not have the 2yr home residency requirement.

I know that with an F1 visa it is possible to stay 1 year working after graduation . Does the same apply to J1?

Thanks

1.5 years if your sponsor (your university) agrees. Be careful though, universities are often listed as sponsors on DS-2019, like in my case, but then below it - a catch: "the sponsor has received government financing." Next thing you know - you are a subject. So, check and recheck that.
