Work authorization for a TN & TD to Greencard

What is the shortest span of time it would take for a TN and TD Visa married couple to both get work authorization, in the process of moving towards green cards. This assumes going directly from TN to Greencard.

We're both patient about getting the greencards, but I would like for my wife to be able to work asap under somekind of visa clearance. Thank you for any advice.

is that true, that you can directly goto green card process while on TN?

My employer checked and told me the following

Yes. TN visa is an non-immigrant visa. He should not have an intention to apply for the residency. H-1B is the only visa that allow the dual intention, which means he can apply for green card while he is holding H-1B non-immigrant status. So, he has to change his status before applying green card.

So as smorin said that he is going directly from TN to Greencard.


Can someone guide here, I am on the same situation and trying to get a way to apply for green card. Is it possible to apply for greencard while working for the same employer?

I've done it without doing consular processing and I didn't have any problems:

If you continue to be concerned that a TN does not allow for immigrant intent, then you can always take the consular route, but you won't get employment authorization as soon as if you had done adjustment of status. )which seems to be the point of smorin's post.
