What job title to use on I-129?

Hi all,

I am working on I-129 now to extend my TN. On the form, it asks for my job title. This is a bit tricky for me. I am a Software Developer and I have a bachelor degree in electrical engineering. When I applied for my first TN at POE last year, the TN petition letter said I am applying for TN in the category of Engineer. It never mentioned my full job title. I was hoping CBP will grant me the TN as a software engineer. However, the CBP officer reviewed my letter and decided that my job is Database Administrator. After consulting his supervisor, he granted me the TN in the category of Computer System Analyst. So, my question is what job title should I put on I-129? Should I use Computer System Analyst or Software Engineer or DBA or my actual job title which is Information Technology Specialist - Application Developer? Thanks in advance.
 
I would use the actual job title of Information Technology Specialist - Application Developer... :D
 
But Information Technology Specialist isn't a NAFTA job title. Should I use something like CSA or Software Engineer? Since I have an electrical engineering degree, I should qualify for Software Engineer. CBP gave me my TN as a DBA which falls into CSA category. Both titles make sense.

rick 92 hasn't a clue as to what he's talking about - I'm surprised that comment about what to do came from a Moderator. It should be removed.

You have a weird situation, but remember that most of the time they are only processing paper work. I would go with what you were approved for. If you change titles then you are actually changing jobs - it would be a new one - yet it could still be the same employer. If you want to get a "new" TN then the letter would have to be for an engineering position.
 
Simsd, thank you for your answer. I agree with you. I don't want to apply for a new TN. I just want to extend what I am approved for. One thing I am a bit concerned is when CBP issued me the TN, they kept my original TN petition letter so the government has it. When USCIS looks at my file and sees that my original TN petition letter states I am applying for TN as an Engineer but I am approved for CSA and my I-129 and new TN petition letter also states CSA, will the inconsistency between what I am approved for and what my original TN petition states cause any problem?

Another concern, my employer is preparing to file I-140 for me. Should the job they are filing I-140 for be consistent with what my TN petition states? If I got my TN as a CSA, should my I-140 also state my job title as a CSA?

There is no need to link the TN and I-140.

There is much more leeway on what your I-140 job title will be. So its title should reflect what the actual job is. And PERM and I-140 sould match of course.

For TN though, I have to go with simsd on this, keep the same TN title CBP gave you, since you say it makes sense either way.
 
Thanks Nelsona for the answer. The title CBP gave me is DBA which is not what I do. They told me DBA falls into the CSA category. When I escorted my wife to the border to get her new TD I-94, the CBP officer didn't know what DBA is until he looked up his manual and saw DBA falls into the CSA category. He said he'll try to change my title to CSA but there is no guarantee. Given all the facts, is it safe to put down CSA on my I-129 as the job title?
 
I have two accounts associated to two different email addresses. I prefer to use this one from now on.
 
I believe you can have whatever job title on letter as long as responbilities correspond to CSA job title. I got approved last time on '*Infrastructure Engineer/*Developer' job title however letter clearly stated in it (a few times actually) that his job corresponds to job specifications of CSA which is one of NAFTA approved job titles. My company's HR guy was hesitant to write CSA on job offer letter as that was not the job title they advertised/hired me for (even though responsibilities were of a CSA). It is easy to convince small companies to write job title CSA for the sake of simplicity and ease in obtaining TN. However it is very difficult to convince HR folks of a large corp. Even when a small company has cleary stated CSA as job title on your letter officers at border still look at it with suspicion. On the other hand if a big corp that officers already know of, has whatever job titile on your letter (corresponding to CSA jobs specs mentioned on letter of course) they accept it rightaway. Just speaking from my own experience, some people here may have experienced totally opposite of this.. Your title doesn't strictly has to be CSA
 
Thanks smr_us for the answer. I agree with you. I think my employer should be ok to put CSA on the letter. Last time they put engineer on my letter although the job is IT. I'll go with CSA this time and hopefully it'll be ok.
