USVI to marry then AOS

Hi everyone.

Because of Covid i sailed my boat to the US and arrived on a B1/2, ended up meeting the girl (US citizen) and proposed on Xmas day, she said yes!
We live in Florida but want to get married in USVI. Anyways....We flew there last week to try and find the right beach, make arrangements etc etc. Upon returning you have to go through immigration to fly back to mainland USA and i showed my British passport with B1/2 which is stamped ok until mid March however i was asked a lot of questions by the CBP officer regarding my intentions, how long i am intending to stay, he went through my passport stamps, looked up on the computer etc and after a lot huffing and puffing he eventually said i could go through.....Now we’re looking at getting married in USVI just before my I-94 expires and then flying home to USA to file for AOS but should we re-think this? It seems it’s not seen as a total domestic flight as we initially thought.

Thanks in advance for any advice!
