travel to canada and passport

Does anyone have knowledge on the following scenario: I need to travel to Canada and my passport will expire in 5 months. I understand that US requires that one's passport has at least 6 months time on it in order to re-enter US. Does it apply to travelling to Canada and Mexico, which are visa free if less than 30 days?
